Welcome to Sandwich

A history-steeped village where dazzling east-coast beaches meet a New England town

Where the waters of the Atlantic come sweeping into the shoreline of Cape Cod’s beaches, the small town of Sandwich sits like a beacon of respite and nostalgia to weary travelers. A historical village overflowing with warmth, Sandwich delights its residents and visitors with its convenience and quaint personality.

Incorporated in 1639 and named for its sister city in Kent, England, Sandwich is famous for its status as the earliest European settlement on Cape Cod. A quaint vibrance permeates all aspects of life in Sandwich, evident in everything from the charming architecture of downtown to the timeless natural beauty and sweeping shoreline.

As would be expected of a town so saturated in tradition, the residential real estate market of Sandwich is absolutely brimming with impressive, historic homes. In Sandwich, potential buyers can expect to find a mixture of architectural styles and settings: grand Colonial estates propped up on quiet cul-de-sacs, classic Cape Cod designs steeped with a quintessentially American feel, and seaside cottages with dreamy views.

What to Love

  • Just an hour’s drive from Boston’s bustling energy
  • Well-established character and values
  • Next door to some of Cape Cod’s most famous stretches of shoreline — the Cape Cod Bay Beach, East Sandwich Beach, and Town Neck Beach

Local Lifestyle

Sandwich is bisected by the U.S. Route 6, which runs along the curve of Cape Code and all the way up north into Boston. As a commuter community, the town is populated with full-time residents looking to set roots in a quiet locale. Sprawling expanses of nature are interwoven throughout the area, and locals can enjoy a range of beaches, woods, and marshes.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Adorable local shops and cafes are sprinkled throughout the town’s main commercial corridors, which leave behind the impersonal airs of typical retail outlets and replace them with independent venues that feel like home. Vintage bridal shops, antique furniture stores, and tempting bakeries are all sprinkled in the area along Main Street, right next to the lovely Shawme Lake.

Among the must-see spots downtown, Dan’l Webster Inn & Spa stands out from the crowd. Not just built to accommodate the town’s visitors, the attached Beach Plum Spa is the best way to unwind in Sandwich, apart from those days spent basking in the beach sunshine. Before starting their spa days, residents can hit up Cafe Chew, a cozy little cafe for the best breakfast bites and espresso drinks.

Part of the allure to living in a coastal town is undoubtedly the bevy of ocean view dining, and Sandwich easily caters to the vista-hungry. At Fisherman’s View, all the seafood is locally sourced, making for some of the freshest ocean-based dishes around. Treehouse Brewing Company is another seaside vision and serves as an airy, modern gathering place with casual outdoor seating and undeniably excellent beers.

Things to Do

Sandwich offers plenty of ways to dig into the town’s rich past and is dotted with a number of incredible establishments vital to the community culture. The Heritage Museums & Gardens rests near the town’s center, set along the waters of Upper Shawme Lake. More than 100 acres of lush, manicured gardens await perusal at this precious town gem, as does a rotation of fascinating historical exhibits.

Getting a taste for the town’s yesteryears and early beginnings is also as simple as taking a stroll down the sidewalks of neighborhoods such as the Jarvesville Historic District. Greek Revival and Cape Cod-style homes occupy the district, which sits on the former site of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. Those intrigued by the town’s history of glassmaking will want to check out the displays of the Sandwich Glass Museum, only minutes away.

Of course, one of the largest attractions of Sandwich is its plenitude of beaches, and Town Neck Beach, in particular, proves to be a true jewel in Cape Cod’s crown. Visitors can walk along the scenic boardwalk to access the sandy beach, which is well-loved for fishing, swimming, and watching boats along Cape Cod Canal.
