Barnstable

Revered among the premier communities of Cape Cod.

Welcome to Barnstable

Home to seven vibrant villages, the town of Barnstable is Cape Cod’s central pulse for culture, entertainment, and rich history

As the largest town on Cape Cod, Barnstable never fails to impress with its cornucopia of culture, arts, and abundant nature. The effervescent town comprises seven distinct villages, from the historic Barnstable village community whose idyllic homes come with views of the Sandy Neck Marsh, to the dynamic village of Hyannis which serves as the central commercial and business district for the entire cape.

Barnstable was first explored by Europeans in 1602, and its later settlement in 1638 makes it one of the first towns created in the famous Plymouth Colony. The town sits on a narrowed section in the middle of the cape, with views of Martha’s Vineyard to the south and gorgeous Sandy Neck area to the north. Revered even among the premier communities of Cape Cod, Barnstable has even been a recipient of the acclaimed All-American City Award.

Though several new-build estates and masterfully crafted modern farmhouses are available throughout Barnstable, the town is particularly well-known — like much of Cape Cod — for its out-of-this-world offerings of historic properties. Fantastic mansions and legacy estates can date back as far as the 1700s, with every era between then and modernity represented. Many of the most coveted homes lie in the village of New Seabury to the south and West Barnstable in the north, the latter of which is lauded for its plentitude of sweeping bay views.

Local Lifestyle

Life in Barnstable is as diverse as its villages and residents. Upbeat city vibes are melded seamlessly into the nostalgic Cape Cod culture, cultivated from the modern luxury that’s been infused into the area’s natural historic allure. A vacation destination for some and a year-round oasis for others, Barnstable is also loved for its multitude of idyllic beaches, bays, and marshes.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Main Street in Barnstable village is the town’s central commercial heartbeat, located next to where the tranquil waters of the Atlantic flow in from the Black Bank Channel. Right on the bay, Mattakeese Wharf has heavenly sunset views and a delectable menu of fresh, casual seafood. From here, residents can follow Millway inland to the main stretch of shops and eateries.

There’s an eclectic appeal to Main Street in Barnstable. Local community theaters sit across from fashion boutiques, specialty shops, and gourmet grocers like the Barnstable Market. Gastronomes often fall in love with the collection of top-notch dining venues, including The Dolphin Restaurant. A Barnstable landmark, local hangout, and fine dining institution for more than 70 years, The Dolphin radiates with that much-loved, immaculate New England style and neighborhood friendliness.

The Buttercup Cafe is a staple breakfast joint for Barnstable residents, inviting diners in with the enticing aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls and savory breakfast bowls. Coffee connoisseurs will find no better cup than one filled with the piping-hot brews of Nirvana Coffee Co. Expertly pulled espresso, all organic and fair-trade beans, and an unbeatable friendliness all contribute to this little cafe’s undeniable appeal.

Things to Do

Barnstable’s charismatic personality — akin to something one might expect to encounter on an idyllic television set — is pervasive throughout every aspect of the town, including its remarkable rotation of community events. Perhaps the most popular celebration of the year, the Barnstable Village Stroll is a special holiday season festival for all ages. Sip on fresh ciders and delicious hot cocoa while taking a walk along Main Street, munching on free treats and taking in the enchanting holiday décor.

In the summer heat, many of the town’s smaller villages hold their own festivities for the 4th of July. Among them, the West Barnstable Parade and the Hyannis Dancing in the Street event are two of the most anticipated. Ready to dive a little further into the culture of Cape Cod? Spend time whale watching from the Barnstable Harbor before taking the evening to participate in the Barnstable Haunted History Tour, a must for all history buffs and paranormal aficionados.
